Concussion Safety

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury that disrupts normal brain function. It occurs when a bump or blow to the head causes the brain to move back and forth within the skull. To ensure proper healing, it's crucial to get adequate rest from both physical activities and schoolwork.

What are the Roles and Responsibilities of the Coach?

If a head injury occurs during a game, the coach should immediately assess the child on the field and document any symptoms. Parents must be notified right away, and all head injuries should be referred to a physician for evaluation as soon as possible.

The coach should also maintain regular communication with the parents, checking in weekly to review and adjust any necessary physical accommodations.

To prioritize the health and safety of our young athletes, VAA requires all coaches to complete the HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports online training course. This course provides essential information on preventing, recognizing, and responding to concussions.
